Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) is a private university inheriting the tradition of Sungkyunkwan, the highest educational institute of the Joseon Dynasty. Founded in 1398 and reformed as a university in 1895, the school consists of two campuses, one in Hyehwa, central Seoul, and one in Suwon, Gyeonggi.

The Hyehwa Campus is home to the historical hall Myeongnyundang, or Hall of Enlightenment. This hall has played important role in Joseon academia and is visible today printed on the 1,000 won bill. Due to the location of the famous hall, the campus is often referred to as the Myeongnyun Campus.

Sungkyunkwan University is considered one of the most prestigious universities in Korea, included in the "So-Sung-Han" (Sogang, Sungkyunkwan and Hanyang Universities) list of the top three schools ranked under the infamous S.K.Y. trio. The Humanities and Social Science Departments are at the Hyehwa Campus, while the Natural Science Departments are in Suwon.

The school has been in partnership with Samsung for research and development as well as globalization since 1996, and is investing in software programming and nanotechnology research. International students who are familiar with the school are likely to know it due to the influence of the famous historical drama “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” (2010), a story of elite Sungkyunkwan Confucian scholars from the Joseon Dynasty.

Sungkyunkwan University takes pride in its global mindset, with diverse programs and facilities aimed at international students such as the Korean Language Center, Exchange Student Program, Student Buddy Group GSN HI-CLUB and annual summer program.
