Located in Guro District, western Seoul, Sungkonghoe University was established by Reverend Mark Napier Trollope in 1914, first opening under the name Saint Michael Seminary. Sunkonghoe University is a Christian university as its name Sungkonghoe, or Anglican Church, suggests, and has Chapel as one of the required courses for graduation. However, like most Christian universities in Korea, the school does not require its students to be Christian nor pressures them to be Christians. It is known for its inclusive community even among other Christian schools as Sungkonghoe University’s Chapel is occasionally led by Buddhist monks and believers of other religions. Sungkonghoe University has four colleges and seeks to be a liberal arts college, requiring its students to either take double major courses or minors. Its undergraduate enrollment is relatively low, with some 1,900 students.
