Founded in 1897, Soongsil University is a private university located in Dongjak District in southern Seoul. It was originally established in 1892 in Pyeongyang by an American missionary Dr. William M. Baird, and was reestablished in Seoul after th Korean War. Its founding philosphy is "Truth and Service," which is reflected in the school name. Soong, roughly meaning revering God, with Sil meaning truth and integrity. The university has around 14,000 enrolled undergraduate students and 2,000 international students.
