Located in Nowon District, northern Seoul, Sahmyook University was founded in 1906 by Seventh-day Adventist missionaries from the United States, Mimi Scharffenberg and William Robert Smith. The university is known for its courses in nursing, health and welfare-related majors. Sahmyook University is part of a global network of Seventh-day Adventist institutional universities, which include more than 90 schools overseas, and also has non-SDA sister universities outside Korea. The school cafeteria does not offer meat in compliance with the Church’s doctrine.
