Kongju National University was founded in 1948 as the Kongju Teacher's College. Considering its roots, it is unsurprisingly still well-known for its college of education. The kindergarten located in the university is Korea's first government-established kindergarten. The university has four campuses, all in South Chungcheong, with the Singwan Campus in Gongju considered the main campus. The Okryong Campus is also in Gongju and located 20 minutes away by bus from the main campus. It is home to the Institute of Korean Education & Culture, the only institution that offers Korean homeland education, or programs designed for people of Korean heritage that want to learn more about Korean language, culture and history. The Cheonan Campus offers classes for the university's engineering major and the Yesan Campus offers agriculture science-related classes.
