Hongik University is best known for its programs in art and architecture. Established in 1946, the private university is located in the heart of Hongdae (the very name of which is short for Hongik University in Korean) in Mapo District, western Seoul, one of the most popular neighborhoods in the capital where young people go to enjoy street art, live performances, trendy clothes and unique bars and cafes. Hongik University has three campuses – two in Seoul and one in Sejong, which is about an hour-and-a-half's drive south of Seoul.
