It is one of four public science and engineering universities in Korea. DGIST was founded by the Korean government on Sept. 7, 2004, as a research institute to help boost the local economy of Daegu. It later transitioned to a research-oriented university, leading to the opening of its graduate program in 2011 and undergraduate program in 2014. The university focuses on majors such as emerging materials science, information and communication engineering, robotics engineering, energy systems engineering, brain and cognitive sciences and new biology. The graduate courses at the university are in English. The main campus is located at the Daegu Technopolis complex in Dalseong Country, in the Daegu Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone, which is designed to become a futuristic high-tech scientific center with research institutes, universities and high-tech companies and offering academia-industry cooperation opportunities. DGIST is a member of K-STAR, or Korean Universities for Science and Technology and Advanced Research, a network of the five leading science and engineering universities in Korea, alongside KAIST, GIST, UNIST and POSTECH.
