Catholic Kwandong University was founded in 1954 and stands in the coastal city of Gangneung, Gangwon. It started as a university without any religious affiliations but later became a catholic school when it was acquired by the Incheon Catholic Foundation. Although a catholic school, it doesn't require chapel attendance like most religious schools. However, students have to take two out of the total nine courses offered on the Anthropology program to graduate. The courses teach ethics and moral values through philosophical and Catholic approaches, but students can avoid taking religion-focused courses if they wish as not all courses are based on religious teachings. The university's Sebastiano Sports Center was used as the official ice hockey stadium during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Since the Olympics, the stadium has been used by the university's Department of Physical Education and sports-related clubs, and is also rented for other sports events.
